Just Back From: Sicily and Mallorca
July 7, 2016 by Isla Steinberg
Isla just returned from Sicily and Mallorca – here is what she has to say:
Sicily is a very large island with the sites of interest quite far apart. I toured the southern half of Sicily including Taormina, Siracusa / Ortigia, Noto, Marzamemi, Ragusa/Ibla, Modica, Piazza Armerina and Agrigento.
Guiding rates are controlled by the government in Sicily. They are as follows:
2 hours. Eur 130
4 hours. Eur 150
8 hours. Eur 250
Cruise ships arrive in the Bay of Naxos just below Taormina which sits high on a cliff. The town is beautiful with one Main Street that has high end shops, tons of restaurants and a few pretty piazzas. The ruins of the Greek theatre is the most popular tourist site in town. Mount Etna is a recommended tour approx 50 min from Taormina.
Day Tours from Taormina
Mount Etna – about 1 1/4 hour drive each way – 5 hours min
Siracusa / Ortigia – 1 1/2 hours each way.
Full or half day tour Godfather tour
Half to full day tour Piazza Armerina – famous Roman villa with best preserved mosaic tiles – 2 hours each way
